What does Short Term Insurance Ombudsman do?

Established in August 1989, The Office of the Ombudsman for Short-Term Insurance wa established in the 1980's. Its main existence is to provide customers with a free dispute resolution mechanism.

It offers a "no risk" way to resolve disputes between customers and insurers. The Office can assist personal short-term insurance such as; Motor insurance, House owners Buildings and contents insurance, cell phone insurance. travel insurance, disability issues, credit protection insurance.

The Insurance Ombudsman can also solve insurance issues for small businesses, including a sole proprietor or trader, a juristic person, partnership or trust that has a turnover in the last financial year of less than R25 million.

Claim disputes, which the Office can assist with, include fire and allied perils, glass, theft, motor, travel, sickness and accident and SASRIA claims.

Short-term insurance is insurance that you take out on your possessions such as your house, car, cellular phone or home contents against loss due to events such as fire, burglary or damage. You can also buy short-term insurance to cover your health or disability events as well as a legal liability.
